Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a cognitive therapy foundation that helps to challenge those automatic thoughts and beliefs that may not align with the truth. DBT is a more intensive therapy that teaches patients how to deal with emotional regulation, distress tolerance and coping skills they may not have learned earlier in life.

The primary goal of DBT is to help patients learn and apply a variety of skills such as mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation skills to help them thrive in recovery.

Often, patients’ beliefs will be clouded by their misperceptions, ruminating, and overthinking about the past. Mindfulness helps patients focus on the present and deal with what is currently going on. By focusing on the present, patients learn to take care of their needs in the moment and how to self-regulate their emotions to avoid unhealthy, destructive behaviors.
Interpersonal communication skills are crucial in learning how to connect with others. Patients learn how to listen and communicate their thoughts and emotions effectively. By learning how to deal with difficult situations and people, patients also learn how to repair relationships that may have been severed by their past drug and alcohol addiction.
Often the effect from past traumatic situations leaves patients paralyzed and unable to move on and live in the present moment. Sometimes stressful situations or encounters with certain people will trigger past traumatic situations.
Distress tolerance teaches patients how to regulate their emotions during high times of distress. Patients learn how to develop crisis survival skills and acceptance skills to deal with painful life events so they don’t resolve to drugs, alcohol or other destructive behaviors to cope.
With a combination of mindfulness training, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance, patients learn vital emotional regulation skills to help them better understand their emotions. During those stressful times, patients learn how to reduce their intense feelings and deal with strong emotions without feeling overwhelmed or on edge.
